This private model isn’t an entirely new one. A few weeks back, a group show called “Interregnum” opened on the private property of artists Jicky Schnee and Matt Jones, who hope to turn it into yet another art space in the region - just not a traditional one. There’s working farm-meets-sculpture park The Sunfair, an upstart from Joshua Tree cast-offs Sloan Shaffer and Jordana Longo, who now oversee their land and art collection near Hudson. Free from the restrictions of commercial rents and the formality of client-dealer relationships, experimentation can flourish in these privately owned spaces - and gesture toward bringing everyone together. Quite a few are popping up in homes and private studios. Yet unlike traditional galleries downstate, art spaces in the Hudson Valley are not limited to storefronts or town centers.
